ECO, a leading international trade magazine reporting from the frontline of ocean science and exploration, announced the upcoming publication of a special issue dedicated to ocean sound.
The Ocean Sound issue will be produced in partnership with the International Quiet Ocean Experiment (IQOE), an international scientific program that aims to promote research, observations, and modeling to improve understanding of ocean soundscapes and effects of sound on marine ecosystems. The IQOE is implemented by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO).
“IQOE is the first global project developed by the international acoustics and bioacoustics communities with the aim to create global time series of sound levels in the ocean, and to coordinate data and research on the effects of sound on marine organisms. These activities are important for understanding the changes occurring in the ocean as a result of both natural forces and human activities,” said Ed Urban, Executive Director, Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research, University of Delaware.
Traveling at speeds five times faster in water than in air, sound can travel across vast distances and reach into the deep depths of our oceans. Understanding the impacts of underwater noise is becoming increasingly vital with human-derived sound on the rise in our coastal zones and blue economy sectors ‘noisily’ expanding beyond the continental shelf.
Available in June, the digital issue will highlight international research, mitigation projects, opinions by field experts, and advancements in monitoring technologies.
"Over the last decade, the field of ocean sound research has grown significantly. We’re excited to partner with the IQOE program, SCOR, and POGO, to showcase the important work happening in this area today,” said Kira Coley, Senior Editor of ECO magazine. “I also hope this special issue will promote further discussion and collaboration between the wider ocean science community and industry, so we can continue to advance our understanding of the impacts on marine ecosystems."
ECO and IQOE invite researchers, engineers, and industry involved in ocean sound projects to submit articles about their activities. Those wishing to contribute are encouraged to email the editor before submitting content. The deadline for submissions is May 15th.
The special issue is made possible by sponsorship of ocean science institutes and industry members. Sponsorships packages are available for those interested in supporting the issue’s important message.
