After a landmark year, ECO (Environment, Coastal and Offshore) Magazine today announced new plans to expand the publication’s global reach in 2020 and beyond.

Following a successful relaunch in 2019, which saw an editorial shift towards critical and emerging topics within ocean science, innovation and exploration, ECO Magazine has committed to broadening its international readership even further by producing a series of exclusive digital editions—in conjunction with key strategic partners—that aim to explore the next decade’s most pressing issues in ocean science.

“We’ve seen increasing international engagement with our editorial content throughout 2019. With online page views up by 100 percent (53,000 per issue on average), we’ve scheduled a series of exclusive ‘Special Issues’ in 2020 that will address specific areas of global concern among academics, engineers and ocean industry members,” said Kira Coley, ECO Magazine’s senior editor.

As part of a new Global Reach Strategy, ECO’s 2020 editorial calendar will feature three special issues to promote and share developments in Coral, Polar and Deep-Sea research and innovation.

The decision to hone in on these critical topics comes on the back of the international success of ECO’s Ocean Sound Special Issue, published in June 2019. Produced in alliance with the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO), the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the International Quiet Ocean Experiment (IQOE), the critically acclaimed edition struck a chord with widening audiences—to date, page views have exceeded 100,000.

“The ocean community is global, and we understand both the importance and challenge of profiling breakthrough research, leading fieldwork and emerging opportunities for scientific collaboration. Platforms such as ECO, bolstered by strategic editorial partnerships, allow collaborators to connect with a highly targeted and increasingly international readership. The introduction of three new special issues in 2020 will enable ECO to better support the distribution of information critical to a more sustainable ocean in the future,” said Coley.

Alongside the special issues, ECO recently announced a number of high-profile editorial partnerships for 2020 including the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO in support of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, and Frontiers in Marine Science, the world’s largest and fastest-growing marine science journal.
