TSC’s publishing portfolio, which includes Ocean New & Technology (ON&T), ECO Magazine, Offshore Source, SubCableWorld, and Ocean Mining Intel (OMI) work in unison to report on the ocean and offshore industries but they are also underpinned by a common editorial philosophy: these media platforms are produced for the industry, by the industry.
As cliché as that might at first sound, the editorial staff has never strayed from this maxim. Over the years, every printed issue, digital special issue, and online newsletter has been carefully crafted to showcase the breaking industry news, technological breakthroughs, important projects, and thought leadership in partnership with a broad range of stakeholders, advisors, and sector experts.
Beyond News
Today, curated news and opinion in an already cluttered mediascape is critical. From a publisher’s perspective, it demands that we give loyal readers an accurate and up-to-date snapshot of key developments and trends—we keep the ocean professional community in the know, so to speak, always. Our job is not to overwhelm readers but rather offer them a window from which they can explore topics in further depth, on- or offline.
For our advertising partners, this readership engagement provides the ideal environment for companies to promote relevant products and services to target audiences—genuine purchase decision makers and influencers. For contributors, the authors of the many featured articles and exclusive opinion pieces, these publications provide a podium for genuine thought leadership; that is, an opportunity to discuss issues, challenge convention, and ultimately propose fresh thinking. This symbiotic relationship between readers, advertisers, and thought leaders ensures that we always go beyond the news.
Editors in the Spotlight
But, of course, there is another vital ingredient in media mix. Notwithstanding the impeccable job that TSC’s design team does to inject color and vitality into the glossy spreads, or indeed the reliable and reassuringly assertive efforts of our production team—the unsung heroes who marshal quality control, proofreading, printing, and distribution deadlines—but the overall direction of any one publication hinges on its pool of talented editors.
In TSC’s case, they come from various backgrounds and specialisms, each one bringing a wealth of expertise and knowledge to the table. But more than the requisite credentials and journalistic qualities, they all live and breathe the same shared TSC adage: for the industry, by the industry.
Recognition and reward, therefore, has always come from giving industry professionals greater access to timely media opportunities, whether as readers, advertisers, or guest contributors. The success of the various titles, it is commonly accepted, will be in elevating people, products, and projects across commercial, government, and academic markets across the globe. And this has proven to be a recipe for success across a portfolio that dates to 1980, when ON&T was launched.
ECO Magazine’s Editor Shortlisted for Award
ECO Magazine—Environmental, Coast & Offshore Magazine by birthright—was launched more recently, in 2013. With each year since, it has grown in stature, readership, and relevance. Reporting from the front line of ocean science, ECO has helped shine a light on the most pressing matters facing the ocean science community, while giving voice to the many scientific bodies, associations, and individuals proffering research-based, scalable solutions to mounting challenges. Again, by the industry, for the industry. Consequently, year-on-year readership and engagement is up and, as is customary in the trade publishing game, advertising revenues have followed suit.
Much of this success is down to the dedicated efforts of ECO’s current editor, Kira Coley, who took over the editorial reins in 2018. So, it was particularly exciting to recently learn that Kira has been shortlisted for Editor of the Year 2022 by the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW), a membership association for media professionals that covers science, medicine, environmental, mathematics, engineering, and technology.
The ABSW Awards is a prestigious annual event, with this year’s judging panel including editors and journalists from The Economist, BBC, and New Scientist. Other finalists in the Editor of the Year category include Helen Pearson, Nature; Nigel Praities, Pharmaceutical Journal, and Sarah Richardson, Research Professional News. The winner will be announced on July 14 at the official awards ceremony in London.
“Kira has taken ECO Magazine to the next level both in terms of quality content curation and outreach, and this nomination represents some much deserved industry recognition and is a sources of enormous pride for the whole TSC team,” said TSC president Jessie Lewis. “Kira’s stewardship and commitment to showcasing the many scientists and organizations carrying out essential research around the world, projects that demonstrate the real-world application of leading-edge technological solutions in the field, embodies the spirit of for the industry, by the industry.”
Kira, ever unassuming, was humbled: “This is fantastic news that acknowledges the hard work of all the TSC team involved in the production, design, and planning process.”
The whole TSC team has their fingers and toes crossed for the awards evening on July 14, but she needs no award to win our praise.
